New Highs and Lows: stocks hitting 52-week highs and lows

A stock that closes above its highest close of the past year is making a new 52-week high. Many traders watch these stocks because strength tends to attract more buyers. The New Highs/Lows scanner checks every U.S. and Canadian stock after the close and lists the ones that made a new high or a new low over the last 14, 30, 90, 180 or 365 days.

It also lists intraday highs and lows: stocks that traded beyond their range during the day but closed back inside it, which can be a sign the move ran out of steam.

Questions

What is a new 52-week high?

A stock makes a new 52-week high when it closes above its highest close of the past year. A new 52-week low is a close below its lowest close of the past year.

What is the difference between a new high and an intraday high?

A new high is a close above the previous highest close. An intraday high means the stock traded above that level during the day but closed below it.

Are stocks at new highs a buy?

Not by themselves. New highs show strength, but a stock can reverse right after one. Stocktreats shows you which stocks are making them; the decision stays yours.

How often is the list updated?

Every trading day, overnight after the close. You can switch between 14, 30, 90, 180 and 365 days, and between highs and lows.
