A breakout happens when a stock that traded sideways closes outside its range. The Breakouts scanner follows every U.S. and Canadian stock whose closes stayed within 15% over the last 14, 30, 90, 180 or 365 days, and lists the ones that closed above the top of that range (or below the bottom) in the last session.
The longer a stock traded sideways, the more a breakout can mean. Pair it with the volume, the news and the Sideways scanner, which lists the stocks still in their range.

A stock breaks out when it closes above the highest close of the range it traded in. A breakdown is the opposite: a close below the lowest close of that range.
Over the chosen period, the gap between its highest and lowest close is 15% or less. The Sideways scanner lists those stocks every day.
No. Many breakouts fail and the stock falls back into its range. Breakouts on high volume, after a long range or with news behind them tend to be the ones traders watch. Stocktreats shows you the setups; the decision stays yours.
Every trading day, overnight after the close. The list shows the breakouts of the last session.
