Moving Average Crossovers: stocks crossing their 20, 50 or 200-day average

A moving average smooths out a stock's price, and many traders treat the 50-day and 200-day averages as the line between an uptrend and a downtrend. The Moving Average Crossovers scanner lists U.S. and Canadian stocks whose price crossed their 20, 50 or 200-day simple moving average in the last session.

A cross above the average is a bullish crossover; a cross below it is bearish. The 200-day crossovers are the ones that make headlines.

Questions

What is a simple moving average?

The average of the closes over a number of days. The 200-day simple moving average (SMA) is the average close of the last 200 sessions.

What counts as a crossover?

The previous close was on one side of the average and the last price is on the other side: below then above for a bullish crossover, above then below for a bearish one.

Which average should I watch?

The 20-day average follows short swings, the 50-day the medium-term trend and the 200-day the long-term trend. Crossovers of longer averages happen less often and tend to matter more.

How often is it updated?

Every trading day, overnight after the close.
